Kali is both destroyer and protector as she takes on the demons that would invade our world, while at the same time brings things to an end--a great necessity, since without end, there would be no room as things were continuously born and created in our universe. (Think of a copier machine turned on to run continuously in an enclosed room. Eventually there would be no more space, and through the act of 'creation' the machine itself would final grind to a halt as it was buried and stifled, the 'universe' of the room left forever in a state of unending stagnation, the cycle of life broken.) Thus Kali is a goddess who assists in removal, be it things which would harm or no longer have a useful place in your life, as well as protects.
